SOCIAL CLUB SPRINGS FORWARD
Not only did the Social Club spring forward an hour on March 14th, they sprang forward to St. Patrick’s Day! The Fellowship Hall was decked out in green for the occasion, and the Seekers Class provided a scrumptious lunch: fried chicken, mashed potatoes (Irish, of course), broccoli casserole, buttered corn, tossed salad, rolls, and lemon blueberry cheesecake! Thanks go to Robyn Frazier, Becky Hinrichs, Keith & Amanda Moore, Sharon Simpson, Peggy Smith, Mary Weaver, Amy Bradford, Julia Martin, Cheryl Carter, Helen Clemens, Mary Grace Boitnott, Mary Ann Morgan, Barbara Moughton, Ruth Siko, and Charlotte Wells for all that good food. And though there was lots of food,
there weren’t many leftovers!
After lunch we all gathered round Station NUMC and the inimitable Keith Moore for a “talk show”. Various Social Club members volunteered to be interviewed by Keith. Northview’s Social Club is 5 years old (the first meeting was in March of 2005) and most of the members have been with us all of that time. With Keith’s gentle prodding, we were able to learn lots of new things about our friends. Audrey has 5 children, ranging in age from 38 to 44; Jayme is on medication for epilepsy, and has been seizure-free for 3 months; Jessica was home-schooled; Tina has 2 beautiful daughters; David worked at the Oasis Restaurant for 22 years; Donald had a motorcycle and loved to ride; Timothy, who has always been very withdrawn, told us he likes to play the guitar and sing! Who knew? He even sang for us! Keith was, in turn, serious and funny. He cajoled, kidded, sympathized, and encouraged. And, most importantly, everyone listened. It was a warm and intimate time together. The activity led naturally to members’ various concerns and a time of prayer.
On April 22, the All Social Clubs Dance will be held at Holiday Inn Tanglewood.
Our own Jayme will be defending her title of Queen of the Dance!

Members of Northview UMC, Jean Broyles and Bethany Frazier, were part of a Roanoke District UMC sponsored mission team to the Boca Costa Medical Mission in Mazatenango, Guatemala in June, 2009.
The team of seventeen was made up of doctors (Pediatricians Bill Kagey and Mark Patterson), a Nurse Practitioner (Joan Wotring), 5 nurses( Helen Ammen, Mickie Kagey, Jane LaPrade, Diane Milenbachs and Jean Broyles), Teacher Katie Scott, College Students Bethany Frazier and Melissa Patterson and 6 others (Larry Lance, Frances Drewry, Tom Wotring, Grant Montara, Jessica Sprigings and Mary Ellen Campbell).
Our purpose was to spread God’s love among the Mayan Indians in one of the poorest parts of the Western Hemisphere. Medial care for these Mayans is almost non-existent except for the clinics Jim and Diane Thompson, formerly of Asheville, NC, have established in two villages in the last six years. Short term mission teams are welcome and help see many more patients than Diane and two trained Mayans can take care of.
Besides treating approximately 750 patients during the week, the team provided fluoride treatments for approximately 500 children and each child was given a toothbrush and toothpaste and a demonstration on how to clean their teeth and the importance of doing that.
Part of the team helped build two classrooms for a school that was very overcrowded. The children can go to school through the sixth grade but have to pay for it (approx. $250/year) for higher levels. Most can’t afford but through scholarships the Thompsons have established, forty youth are able to further their education.
The rest of the team provided VBS for the school children and were rewarded with many smiles and hugs.
Our hearts were warmed by the experience and we welcome others who would like to participate, especially dentists. There is a great need and no dentists in the areas.
